Fall 2021 Yale College COVID policy for performing arts

During 20-21 all performance was required to be hybrid or virtual. As public health conditions improve we will beign to reactivate these activities in person.

This version is in effect from August 23, 2021 until conditons permit/require change. This represents an approved exception to the Events, Gatherings, and Meetings requirements, which generally prohibit aersolizing activities in groups. 

  • These  parameters apply to the following aerosolizing arts activities:
    • Dance
    • Orchestras and other instrumental activities
    • Comedy/spoken word/theater
    • A capella, opera, and other singing
  • Parameters for early fall
    • Only asymptomatic vaccinated students, faculty, and staff are permitted to take part in aerosolizing arts activities.
      • At this time New Haven community members and other visitors may not take part. On-leave students are considered visitors and may not take part in on-campus activities.
    • Maximum of 20 performers may rehearse or perform together at a time.
    • Masks must be worn at all times during indoor activity.
    • Wind instruments must use slitted masks and bell covers. (Contact daisy.abreu@yale.edu for assistance purchasing slitted masks and bell covers)
    • Mask requirements for outdoor arts activity are as follows:
      • Masks are optional, at the discretion of the participant, for outdoor dance.
      • Masks are optional, at the discretion of the participant, for outdoor comedy/spoken word/theater.
      • Masks are optional, at the discretion of the participant, for outdoor singing, if there are at least 12’ between performers.
      • Masks are optional, at the discretion of the participant, for outdoor wind instruments, if there are at least 12’ between performers.
      • Solo non-wind musicians do not need to mask outdoors.
    • Activity must be no longer than an hour in duration.
    • Allow a 15-minute vacant rest period between multiple uses of the same space to allow aerosols to disperse.
    • Activity must take place on campus and in approved spaces:
      • Outdoors
        • Spaces that require special permission include Beinecke Plaza, Old Campus, Cross Campus, and college courtyards.

      • Indoor spaces not on list will be reviewed by request – contact justin.deland@yale.edu to inquire about a space

    • Performances to co-present audiences:
      • Must be planned with guidance and approval from an Undergraduate Production Technical Director
      • Must be outdoors in college courtyards or other gated (access controlled) spaces
        • Reserve space with Head of College office or other space manager
      • 12’ space to be maintained between performer/s and audiences
      • Yale only (student/faculty/staff) audiences
      • Performers + audience to not exceed 50 people
    • Performances to virtual audiences
