Position Available - Technical Director 2025-2026
Unit: Yale Undergraduate Production
Title: Technical Director
Full time, fixed duration position, with possibility of continuation. Periodic evening and weekend work is required.
Review of applications will begin in mid June, 2025 and will continue until position is filled.
Start date range: August 5 - Sept 5.
Position Focus:
Advise and oversee all aspects of undergraduate performance-based activities, both curricular and extra-curricular, in a range of venues across campus, ensuring safety throughout the process. Working in a team of Technical Directors, manage programs and facilities in order to ensure the safety of over 700 student practitioners and 25,000+ audience members annually. Foster an inclusive and respectful working environment around production activity at Yale College. Carry out duties while exercising a high degree of autonomy and discretion.
Reports to: Director of Production
Essential Duties:
- Lead safety oversight and support of designated undergraduate productions in a range of venues.
- Oversee designated theater facilities. Ensure safety of facilities at all times. Lead and oversee the planning of upgrades to spaces.
- Manage Undergraduate Production equipment stock. Direct/execute improvements when needed.
- Advise staff and students on technical issues and compliance with safety regulations.
- Coordinate with staff in safety offices at Yale, including Environmental Health, Risk Management, and Safety and Fire Code Compliance.
- Evaluate student capabilities and, as needed, supervise, train, and mentor, students during strikes, load-ins, and tech rehearsals.
- Oversee and advise the work of designated undergraduate organizations (clubs).
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in theater and a minimum of 5 years of related experience; or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Education and Experience:
ETCP and/or OSHA certifications welcome.
Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of standard practices, equipment, and software in the areas of theatrical scenery, lighting, rigging, sound, and projection, including but not limited to ETC consoles, Qlab, and AutoCAD.
- Knowledge of production-related health and safety best practices and concerns and ability to identify and correct potential hazards.
- Demonstrated ability to manage and prioritize complex workload.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively and flexibly with a large number of faculty, staff, students, community members, guest artists, and other professionals representing a wide diversity of personalities and cultures.
Physical Requirements
- Stand for long periods.
- Hold and operate hand and power tools.
- Repeatedly bend, stoop, kneel, crawl, squat and crouch.
- Repeatedly lift, carry, push or pull up to 50 lbs.
- Climb stairs and ladders and work effectively at elevations up to 40’.
- Drive cargo van and box truck.
