Web Resources

The following web tutorials cover some of the equipment available to you in the theaters, as well as some design software to help you throughout the production process.

ETC Element - This lighting console is part of ETC’s EOS family, and is found in every undergraduate theater space.  The tutorials on this site cover everything from very basic operation to moving lights and complex effects.
QLab - This show control software is great for creating and controlling your sound cues, but in more complex set-ups can be used to control audio, video, and lighting, all from one laptop.  These tutorials give you a great introduction to this progam, and more tutorials are being added all the time. Undergraduate Production has one Macbook Pro with a full QLab license installed available for use by undergraduate productions.  A trial version can be downloaded for free and daily licenses can also be rented.
Millumin - This video playback system can handle projection mapping and any video playback. It also handles audio and dmx if needed. It has an easy learning curve, and excellent customer support. A 30 day free trial is available.  For mac only.
SketchUp - Trimble SketchUp is a 3D modelling program that is great at creating everything from basic 3D scenes to fully rendered 3D environments.  The online tutorials give you a great start at understanding the possibilities of this software.  Undergraduate Production has Sketchup models of all of our theater spaces available for download from the Performance & Rehearsal Venues page.  The software can be downloaded for free and educational licenses are available.
Vectorworks - The standard for professional lighting design, Vectorworks Spotlight is available in a free educational version.  These guides walk you through the basics of operation, and the video library offers more great resources.
Box at Yale - Need to share large files such as Sketchup models or Vectorworks plots with your production team?  Box at Yale is the answer!  Box at Yale is a cloud-based file sharing and storage service and can be accessed through any device: desktop, laptop, phone or tablet.  As a Yale student, you already have access to a 50GB account!  
Lynda.com - An online subscription library that teaches the latest software tools and skills through high-quality instructional videos taught by recognized industry experts. The full range of this content is now available to all current faculty, staff, and students of the University.  Many notable audio and graphic design software tutorials are available.
HandsOnlyCPR - The American Heart Association’s online tutorial on how to save a person’s life with CPR.  Everyone should watch this video!
STC Studios - STC Studios is a free graphic design and event support group run by students through the Student Technology Collaborative. They provide photography, videography, poster and logo design, and other media support. Their request form can be found here. (They ask for two weeks notice on any request).
